I do think social cohesion is impacted by a variety of factor's not just technology. One only has to look at the industrial revolution in Europe and the US to see social cohesion underwent change when people migrated to larger towns and cities in search of employment.

Similarly the present day 'information revolution' we are experiencing see's a reinterpretation of what community means, that expands beyond nations' borders.

It's not a case of whether technology has a detrimental or positive effect on communities...it may well be that it simply has an impact that has still unfolding.
