I love few things more than busting hype, but the more I think about augmented reality's potential the more I love it. We are quickly getting past the "augmented spam" layer where the idea is little more than the fact you are using augmented reality to see a car driving.

If anything the term augmented reality is holding us back. Realty we are creating a 4th dimension. A digital layer to life unlocked by different keys - be it a QR code, camera, GPS or something else we invent. It can just be audio, visual or promotional. The best part is the control in that an individual has to accept or deny participation.

It also jumps past the physical digital layer many are attempting - building wrapped by physical screens and the such. This will have a place but the sunk cost of creating layers in the 4th dimension rather than physical dimension just seems more intelligent - provided you can do something interesting enough for people to care.

Thanks for this post, good stuff.

Interesting comment - thanks Brett. If you look at the Wikipedia definition it talks about the Reality-Virtuality Continuum that spans from the real environment to a pure virtual environment, with Augmented Reality (nearer to the real environment) and Augmented Virtuality (nearer to the virtual environment) in between. It's an interesting thought that what some of it could do is negate the need for new physical things
