Just read this and think it is a key area that people aren't looking at in terms of the levels of influence over one's social network vs size of network. I had a rant about it a while back. I think it is such a key area.

I love the concept of "ambient intimacy" but I'm not sure that's where the value of the new digital tools, and longtail, really lie. In an environment such as a social network, the lack of transaction costs somewhat mitigate the development of deep relationships. Certainly these budding relationships can be taken offline or to a more intimate place, but they likely won't be. The size of our social core has been largely fixed over time and is probably not ready to expand. However, the power of the longtail doesn't necessarily come from your distribution of ambiently intimate (?) friends, but rather from your connectedness to more distant generations of acquaintances. Clicking through Twitter RTs and the like, I find lots of new interesting people. There is less than ambient intimacy with most of these people, but there is a great value exchange.

the ambient thang is really just knowing other people care about you, mebbe just a little more than they would otherwise. This is a a valuable thing.
