So true Neil, challenging conventions is crucial to keeping things fresh and relevant.

Our attitude to change (ambivalence, denial etc) is often the deciding factor in how we cope with change itself. There's a great quote from the movie 'Peaceful Warrior' that goes something along the lines of:

"The journey is what brings us happiness not the destination"

And I think it just sums events that are unfolding around us perfectly. No-one knows how things will turn out, but let's hit hard on the boulevard to do something today.

I like the image of the lily pond. It is another metaphor for Nonaka's "tacit" and "explicit" knowledge. So much is tacit knowledge that it needs to be made explicit to really get a grip on the dynamics in operation within an organization for it then to go back to an improved tacit knowledge. So the cycle starts all over again.

Hey Neil,

Great post.

"The challenge of course is to lead people and organisations through this cycle, because there are no short-cuts."

On this particular point, I've just finished reading a book called Everything's an Offer by Robert Poynton - applies the principles of improv to work and life - I found it really helpful as it's a superb balance between philosophy and practice. http://www.bit.ly/everythingsanoffer

Heh, interesting lily analogy.
The waterlily (aka lotus, key buddhist symbol) produces a beautiful flower even though its roots in the muddy water. In buddhism this symbolises is that we can rise above being rooted in the shit of this world etc.
The lotus has a unique atribute in that it both blooms and seeds at the same time (the only thing in nature that does so) a metaphor for karma (cause and effect.

Thanks for the comments.

Sam - nice quote
Tim - like the analogy.
Nick - thanks for tip. Someone else recommended that book to me but I haven't got it yet, so I should put that right
Eaon - yep, nice way to extend the analogy
